Naturopathic Physicians abide by the following six tenets of Naturopathic Medicine:
I. First do no Harm / Primum no Nocere
Are you afraid of the side effects of statins like muscle weakness and changes in sexual function, yet take them for fear of stroke or heart attack?
Healthy dietary fats will NEVER result in muscle weakness or changes in sexual function. I can help you adjust your diet and choose the appropriate supplemental fatty acids eliminating your need for statins.
II. Treat the Whole Person / In Perturbato Animo Sicut in Corpore Sanitas esse non Potest
Are you tired of trying to loose weight with only minimal success?
99% of diets fail because losing weight is not about only diet and exercise. If you are struggling with weight loss there are a number of factors that need to be explored before you enlist yourself in a rigid weight loss program. Most frequently I see people with thyroid, adrenal and other hormonal imbalances which have not been adequately addressed. Ask me for assistance in determining the cause of your weight gain rather than feeling hopeless.
III. Treat the Cause / Tolle Causam
Why do you continue to get infections despite taking antibiotics?
Antibiotics do not improve your baseline health, they simply minimize or eliminate the uncomfortable symptoms you have. Infections are a result of lowered immunity thus when ten people are exposed to one sick child not everyone becomes sick. As a naturopathic physician I can prescribe antibiotics. However because I believe in treating the cause I prefer to use western botanical herbs so that I can strengthen your immune system in addition to killing the infective agent while simultaneously keep you free of the side effects of antibiotics.
IV. Prevention is the Best Cure / Principiis Obsta: sero Medicina Curatur
Diabetes type II can be reversed without prescription medicine.
Even with a genetic predisposition all of us can be free of diabetes when we modify our diet and lifestyle. Oral hypoglycemic medicines will never cure your diabetes they will only treat the symptom of high sugar in your blood. Healthy diet and lifestyle changes not only cure diabetes but add quality to your life beyond what any medicine can offer because the ENTIRE system is being improved, not just your sugar levels. With my extensive knowledge in nutrition I can patiently guide you as you take the steps to make these crucial changes.
V. Honor the Healing Power of Nature / Vis Medicatrix Naturae
Enlist your body as your ally.
Unlike a machine our bodies function every day, even without directives. We take this incredible miracle for granted. Have you ever noticed how a wound, as long as it is clean will form a scab all on its own with no assistance whatsoever? Yes, this is what gives me incentive everyday to continue to practice this great medicine.
VI. Doctor as Teacher / Docere
I encourage you to take charge of your own health.
I am your teacher and partner in health. I am well aware that I am not the healer, YOU are. I provide you with the information and resources you need to redirect your health away from pathology and toward wellness. You are ultimately the master of your own health.
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healing system which incorporates philosophy, science, and art. It is steeped in both ancestral wisdom and modern technology.
Naturopathy differentiates itself from conventional medicine by addressing the causes of ailments, rather than simply trying to manage the indicators of those ailments, also known as symptoms.
Naturopathic physicians use a variety of therapies to bring their patients to optimum health including; homeopathy, diet and lifestyle counseling, nutritional supplementation, botanical therapies, acupuncture, IV therapy and hydrotherapy and pharmaceuticals.
Naturopathic physicians are primary care practitioners who are not only educated in conventional medical sciences but also have done extensive coursework and clinical study in natural therapeutics. A naturopathic physician has a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from a four-year graduate-level naturopathic medical college whose admission requirements are comparable to those of allopathic medical schools. Naturopathic doctoral education is often times more comprehensive than its conventional counterpart. Naturopathic physicians in Oregon are governed by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine, and are required to maintain certifications annually through intensive continuing education.
